Living in Mauritius is an attractive option when you think of the tropical climate, wonderful beaches, political and economic stability and low taxation. There are ample accommodation facilities, from fully serviced apartments to luxurious villas and beachfront residences. Mauritius also offers an affordable cost of living, with medical and health services of a world-class standard.
To apply for a Retirement Permit in Mauritius, the applicant must:
- Be 50 years old or older
- Submit proof of transfer of at least US $18 000* (or its equivalent in any currency) to a Mauritian bank account at the time of the application.
- An initial amount of USD 1500 is required initially followed with a transfer of 18,000 USD per year. Only one person can apply for his RP and the other person can then apply as dependent
- Be in a position to make annual transfers of US $18 000 to a local bank in Mauritius. (Source: Economic Development Board)
* The funds remain yours, the government merely requires proof that you are able to sustain yourself while on the island.
Work and Investing As A Retiree
As a retired applicant, you are not permitted to participate in any profitable activities in Mauritius. Nevertheless, if you want to invest in a business, you are allowed to participate as the minority shareholder in a company. You are also not allowed to work or hold a job responsibility as a full-time company director.
Minimum Period To Stay
The Residence Permit for a retired non-citizen is valid for a renewable three-year period. The Mauritian law does not provide for a minimum number of days to stay annually on the island for people who are here on a Residence permit. However, the person will be considered as a 'resident' for tax purposes, if the stay is more than 183 days per year.
